Digital Vision Syndrome: From Ipads to Eye Strain. Our Digital World Has Consequences

Whether you live in Miami beach or on the other side of the globe, we are experiencing a vision epidemic called Digital Vision Syndrome. This condition produces many symptoms in both the young and old. We are seeing more nearsighted children, due to time spent on these digital devices, but specialized eyeglasses can help.

Digital vision syndrome is a byproduct of our current digital age. Staring at the screen of a digital device causes a multitude of eye problems, some of them can be permanent.

Ask yourself: What can I be doing to avoid this syndrome?

1. See your optometrist and have a pair of special glasses prescribed that decrease the visual demand on the eyes that:  reduce the accommodative (focusing) demand, filter the blue-light emitted from these devices, and allows you to facilitate distance and near viewing without having to change or remove them.

2. Hold these devices at a normal reading distance around 15-20 inches away. Smartphones and tablets are  typically held way too close for comfort.

3. Follow the 20/20/20 Rule: Every 20 minutes take a 20 second break by focusing your eyes  at something at least 20 feet away. Look across the room or out the window.

4. Consider going outside and doing something that is real instead of virtual as much as possible.  Reality is better than virtual reality.
